Chapter 15
Evelyn concentrated on the road while she drove. She thought of the conversation with Lily in the hall the night before. As a matter of fact, she thought of it all night. She wasn’t sure what to do about it, if anything. Certainly, she could leave it alone, and Lily wouldn’t say anything further. That was a given. Or maybe not. Perhaps Lily enjoyed their playful bantering; she grinned at the idea. And maybe Lily lay awake thinking about their conversation.
“What are you grinning about?”
“What? Oh, nothing.”
Unfortunately, they arrived at the train station.
“Here we are.” Evelyn sighed. “I can’t believe you’re leaving.”
“I’m not heading for Dunkirk…”
Evelyn shot an angry glare, then she laughed. “All right, that was amusing. You might as well grab your bag before I do something…”
Lily jumped out of the sports car, grabbing her bag.
“Well, are you in that big of a hurry to get away? I think you’re afraid of me.”
“Not afraid, Lady Evelyn. Terrified.” Lily laughed and slammed the car door. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Will you pick me up?”
“Yes, I’ll take care of it. I’ll never be able to say no to you. Ever.”
Lily shook her head. “You barely know me.”
“I would like to take care of that, as well, if you weren’t so odious.”
“Odious? That’s kind of harsh.”
“Yes, I suppose that is. I don’t loathe you. Or despise you or…”
“I’m going to miss my train.”
Evelyn laughed and sighed happily. “I think I adore you. Is that possible?”
“No. Behave yourself. Spend time with Hillary and stay out of trouble.”
Lily turned and waved as she walked to the train station. Evelyn waved in return, then watched as the train pulled out of the station.
“Leave me behind, will you? I think not. You can’t get away from me that easily, Lily Conover.” She put the car in gear and headed north to London.
*******
Evelyn beat the train by almost two hours, driving far too fast. She drove to her brother’s office first.
“Is Harry in?”
The young man looked up from his file and smiled. “Miss Wimsey! It’s so good to see you again. Of course he’s in. He’s got a meeting in an hour. You have great timing. Go right in.”
“Thanks. It’s good to see you too.” Evelyn knocked but didn’t wait. She opened the door.
Harry looked stunned. “What in the world are you doing here? Sorry about last night.”
Evelyn ran around his desk; Harry met her halfway, giving her a brotherly hug and a peck on the cheek.
“Sit down. Now answer my question.”
“Two things. First, and most importantly, I’ve remembered what happened.”
“What?” Harry grinned. “When? How? Did Dr. Conover help you?”
“Oh, yes. By her suggestion, we went back to the cliffs. And, Harry, it was amazing. Things started to fall into place. And suddenly, I saw everything so clearly.”
“Do you want to tell me or…?”
“Of course. Remember, I said Randy had called me earlier that morning to meet him. Well, when I got there, he was arguing with someone.”
“Yes, I remember. Who?”
“That’s the only thing I can’t remember.
